How to Install your Laminate Floor 4

Check the requirements for expansion for the measurements of your rooms. For some floors that are over 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide or more than 40 feet (12.2 meters) long, additional expansion joints may be needed. The area between adjoining rooms and doorways may require expansion joints. A T-molding should be used to cover the expansion joint. Installation should be done at room temperature of 65 degrees F.

When there is an obstacle, such as a pipe, in or around the area where you are installing laminate panels, leave a gap around the obstacles as you would when installing next to a wall. You will need to measure the area first, then precut the panel. Since there could be condensation around the pipe, when you cut the panel, allow enough space so that the panel will stay dry. It is also a good idea to treat the exposed edge of the panel so that it does not gather condensation. The best method to prevent condensation is to fill the space around the pipe with caulking; that will ensure protection for the exposed panel.

As you lay the first row, measure the row carefully before laying the first panel. The length of the first panel should be cut according to that of the last panel. Measure for straightness then cut the panels. Be sure the inner edge of the first row of panels is square before you start the second row. It is advised to measure the last row for the panel width first, then cut the first row of panels identical to the width as the last row of panels; it is recommended not less than two inches. Place the first row of panels against one wall, and remember to leave adequate space for expansion between the panel and the wall. The ends of the panels should be locked together until the first row is finished.

To install the second row of panels, first of all, make sure that the first panel of the second row is long enough in order for the ends of the second row panels to reach past the end seams of the first row of panels. It is recommended that you use the remaining section of the last panel of the first row for the first panel of the second row (provided the panel is long enough). The first panel of the second row should be lined up so that the outside end is even with the outside end of the first panel of the first row. Lock it in place then lay the remainder of the panels of the row; first lock the long side in place; then tap the end of the panel to slide it snugly into place at the end.
