How to Care for your Floors
Your floors can remain beautiful and even look new for
years if you care for them properly. There are some steps you can take
to accomplish this, many of which merely involve common sense.
Obviously, you should clean your floors on a regular basis. By doing so,
you will lengthen the time between any major renovations that you may
need to perform. Cleaning your floors will involve dusting, mopping,
vacuuming or sweeping on a regular basis. Remember, your floor's worst
enemies are dirt and dust.
Follow the manufacturers' recommended cleaning instructions for products
and procedures, as each type and brand of flooring care needs will
differ. Never use water to clean your wood floors because wood and water
do not mix. Too much water on your wood floors will result in swelling
and other damage. However, you may use a damp mop to clean the surface
of your hardwood floors. Another item that may cause damage to the
surface of your wood or stone floor is the vacuum beater bar. Turn off
the beater bar and use the wand or hose attachment with the soft nozzle
on your stone or hardwood surface.
Before cleaning your floors, make sure to vacuum, sweep or dust mop in
order to remove any dirt and debris.
Do not use furniture polish or any type of dust treatments on hardwood
floors or on floors that are extremely polished. Those types of products
could dull the finish of the floor or result in extremely slippery falls
that could cause falls.
