The Basics of Ceramic Tiles: Characteristics
The characteristics of ceramic tile are quite unique
as there are many variations of the tiles. When you are in the market
for ceramic tile, it is important to evaluate these characteristics and
their unique qualities.
You need to take into consideration how a tile will hold up when
selecting a floor tile that is glazed. Areas of your home that have a
lot of floor traffic, such as kitchens and entry ways must have tiles
that are resistant to wear and abrasion. If you select the proper tile
and maintain it properly, it will last for years, perhaps even for the
life of the home. Tiles that are not glazed naturally contain a
resistance to abrasion, which makes them safer on which to walk.
You must consider the amount of water absorption when you are choosing
tiles which will be installed outdoors. Water absorption of glazed tile
relates to the body of the tile only. Ceramic tiles contains a nonporous
glaze. Whether or not tiles are glazed, if they absorb more than 3%
moisture, they will not be suitable for use outdoors in cold climates,
as they could freeze or crack. This also applies to tiles that must be
frost resistant because the tiles that absorb more than 3% moisture will
also not be conducive to frost. Tiles have greater frost resistance will
absorb less water.
Generally, the most stain resistant building materials are the ceramic
products. Almost all glazed tiles and some unglazed tiles are resistant
to nearly all solutions that may result in staining.
